| Reference Clients: | If unable to deliver to the lab immediately, store and transport specimen at 2-8° C. Specimen must be received in the lab within 48 hours. All specimens drawn as outpatients will be for informational purposes only - not for transfusion. |
| Causes for Rejection: | Improperly labeled, incorrect container, contaminated, insufficient quantity, incorrect/delay in transport, grossly hemolyzed, failure to provide a properly completed Requisition Form and/or a Blood Infusion form. |

| Additional Information: | Graft-vs-host disease (GVHD) may occur following transfusion of viable lymphocytes into immunocompromised patients. Irradiation of all blood products transfused into such patients has been shown to be effective in preventing this complication and is recommended. Recent consensus suggests that cellular blood components should be irradiated prior to transfusion in the following clinical situations: (1) donor is a family member (2) patients with leukemia or lymphoma undergoing treatment (3) patients undergoing marrow transplantation (4) patients with overt, acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, as well as congenital immunodeficiency conditions, such as Wiskott Aldrich syndrome. (5) intrauterine transfusion |
